How to Varnish an Oil Painting with Gamvar Varnish ( 2 min tutorial + save time + save money )
Here's a short condensed tutorial on how I varnish OIL PAINTINGS:
1. prep canvas by taping edges( light adhesive painters tape) if you don't want varnish to get on certain areas of a canvas
2. make sure canvas is touch dry (if you use fast drying mediums like liquin original alongside darker colors it can be touch dry in 3-5 days while if you use slow drying mediums like linseed oil or stand oil with light colors like titanium white it can take 7-14 days).
3. choose Gamblin gamvar varnish type: gloss(high sheen and strong contrast), satin (gentle sheen muted contrasts), matte (flat and less reflective so it helps with reducing glare but does not provide strong colors) I use this Gamvar because it allows for the oil paints to cure while still providing a unified sheen and protective coat of varnish. Traditional varnishes can only be applied after 6 months once the painting has fully cured. Artists have deadlines and timelines so using Gamvar is a great solution.
4. lint roll gently by pushing the roller around (don't apply pressure so you don't accidentally lift off paint)
5. pour varnish into a separate container with a lid to dip your brush into (don't pour varnish directly on canvas).
6. use soft bristle brush (no need for expensive varnish brushes, I use cheap $4 brushes link below) and add varnish a little at a time for a thin even coat (the varnish should be uniform and not be able to form pools around edges or textured areas.
7. Only apply varnish on a flat surface, don't varnish paintings standing upright since varnish will dribble and create unevenness
8. check to make sure there are no hairs, you can lift them off with the edge of a brush or use tweezers. (I usually wear a hat and tuck my shirt in so that I don't get fuzz or hairs on the canvas
9. place canvas in a room with no air circulation so that it can dry in a dust-free environment.
10. I wrap my varnish brush in Saran Wrap so that no dirt or dust settle on the bristles. I can use this same brush for varnishing since gamvar reactivates.

    Nice video! Best way to prevent cracks is following the rules of fat over lean. It's something I'm sure you are doing but when you talk about glazing using liquin or about diluting oil you could be misunderstood. Liquid is lean so is not suitable for glazing. Stand oil is suitable for glazing but diluted 50/50 with odorless mineral solvents makes it less fat and not suitable to use for the final layers. Again, I'm sure you know this but people who don't know it could misunderstand what you are saying.

    Mix 1 part liquin and 3 parts paint very well before hand so the paint and liquin bonds properly. The way you're doing it, you're going to have a yellowed painting.

  • @patriotmonkeyq2232
    @patriotmonkeyq2232 3 місяці тому

    Yikes! You're using way too much liquin. Liquin will yellow if you're not using the right ratio of it and paint. 1 part liquin to 3 parts paint and you should have no problem. If you use too much your painting will yellow.

      If you allow the piece to air dry a couple days you can touch it with your hands as long as you don’t apply pressure (which can leads to fingerprints). I roll and ship my large pieces but I lay plastic or glassine on top to protect the piece.

    • @BeauBFrank
      @BeauBFrank 7 місяців тому

      Hey there, sorry you had a rough time with your lint roller. I should have put out a disclaimer to make sure that lint roller isn't too sticky. I sometimes roll it over my shirt or pants a couple times to remove some of the stickiness if I find it too strong. Also if a painting has lots of texture or areas of the piece that have large clumps of paint that isn't fully dry it can lift it off if the stickiness is too strong! So sorry you had to go through this!

Turning moments that look like they would be "against you" into "for you" is all about reframing and perspective! That time of my life being an artist while having a full-time job set me up for success for my full-time art career that I have now. I did art on the side for almost 6 years before jumping into it. If it wasn't sealed properly it's possible that it turned gummy. I haven't had this happen to me. Has shaking it helped to make it return back to normal otherwise it might be time to put it to rest. I usually buy smaller bottles of varnish/mediums for that exact reason. I'd rather go through fresh product then hold onto old product for years.
